For women in disadvantaged communities a bra is often unobtainable or unaffordable. This project collects new and second hand bras and sends them wherever we have requests.

Fiji, July 2013

In recent months two shipments to Fiji have been made possible through generous discounts by C.T. Freight and Customs subsidies in Fiji. Naomi, the distribution co-ordinator for Fiji, sent these pictures of distribution in Dreketi and Coloisuva.

Over five days Naomi assisted in distributing nearly 4,000 bras to about 900 women. Distribution was in the Dreketi area, comprising 4 villages containing about 700 women, and Coloisuva village of about 200 women. The ladies in these areas do most of the selling of food crops at the local markets to finance their families. Naomi was able to have a few moments in each of the villages to talk about the Uplift Project and about the volunteers and the donors. she also mentioned the odd notes of love and well wishes that sometimes accompanied the mailed parcels.

Fiji_2013_4.jpg Fiji_2013_5.jpg Fiji_2013_1.jpg

Naomi writes that it was a humbling experience and there were lots of tears of laughter, sadness and joy listening to the ladies expressing themselves.

Below are some quotes translated from some of the recipients.

"I am nearing the end of my time on this world and I finally get to experience this great feeling of owning something so beautiful that I had never even dreamt existed when I woke up this morning" from an old lady in her 70s.

"I always thought that bras were the most uncomfortable piece of women's clothing to be ever invented, I can't believe that I would live to see the day that I would own the most beautiful and comfortable bra ever! It's just like a second skin"

"I'm going to leave the price tag on when I wear my bras just to show it off and to remind myself that this is the most expensive piece of clothing that I owned and its all mine alone and I don't have to share it with my family".

"And to think that the only place where we get to buy our bras are from 2nd hand shops, and they cost an unbelievable $8, the quality is so poor that most of them we can't read the sizes on the labels. And to receive four top quality bras today with no costs is just beyond our imaginations".

"We've got families and relatives living overseas, but this is something that we don't think about or even ask them to send over. We would normally ask for money to pay for an endless list of whatever you name... You're not even related to us and what you did today will bring endless smiles to our ladies. Please thank all the people that made this possible. We cannot thank you enough for this greatest gift".

Beqa Island, Fiji. Bra distribution Easter weekend 2012

Naomi and Elina spent five days on Beqa Island, Fiji over Easter.

Naomi writes:

There are nine villages in Beqa and with a female population of around 800, we managed to fit out five of the nine villages with over 600 women/girls having around 3-4 bras each. There were bucket loads of happy tears all around with endless words of gratitude from women and even the males on the island in seeing the joy on the faces of the ladies in their households.

Bra Day Koroipita, Fiji, Nov 2008

Rotarian Rebecca distributed bras. She reports it went very smoothly and turned into quite a social day for young and old. She said that there were some quite young girls hanging around wondering when it would be their turn to be grown up enough to be given a bra of their own!

Bec has since delivered more to those who previously couldn't make the first day at Koroipita and also to another woman who was delighted to deliver bras to share with her own village - in particular to one woman who used to go to the dump to try to find clothes and bras!
